Question 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This is my textual analysis of my music video. The music video I have done is clearly from the/ or based on the Indie genre, which can be seen through the different clothes Jaden is wearing throughout the video. As you can see, there is not much continuity in clothing but this doesn’t matter as much as music videos don’t normally stick to one set thing e.g. one specific place or time period. This means that music videos can be changed around a lot and edited with without worry of something looking different or too abnormal.
As you can see, the start of my music video opens with a slow pan to the left which shows Jaden sitting on my sofa, watching a documentary on Brazil. It shows different scenes.

In this scene, he seems really into Brazil and the culture and what Brazil is like for football. This may suggest that he would rather be there instead of being in Britain.
In the next scene, it shows Jaden staring at the TV from different angles with a Brazilian sunset overlapping him which could show you what he is seeing or perhaps imagining being there after watching the documentary. This effect lasts for about 12 seconds and then quickly cuts away. It is timed well as it works with the faint humming near the beginning as it comes in just before then.

This suggests he wants to see the beautiful sunset for himself instead of staring at his TV. It also suggests Brazil is more colourful than Britain and has much nicer views too. The camera then blurs and wipes down and becomes 4 blocks which are duplicates of Jaden; this is a nice little affect which works well for when it is used. At this point, the faint humming is still happening so it works as a chiming affect.

The camera cuts to an extreme close up of Jaden’s face with a smile on it which could suggest that he is happy and excited about Brazil and what he has seen of it. It also cuts back to the four duplicate blocks of Jaden but now he has started singing. The shot used here is a mid shot so you can see the mise-en-scene and how he is dressed. As you can see, his clothing has changed which may suggest he thinks of Brazil often and how much he envies the people there. The camera then cuts to the close up of Jaden again, singing this time. However an effect similar to the sunset overlay effect is used to show a map of Brazil; this is timed well as it appears as he says “to show the country that you’re from”. This suggests that he has been doing research on Brazil and shows that he is becoming more obsessed with it.

The camera then does a series of cuts between Jaden in the sitting room and the hall with mid shots and extreme close ups to show Jaden in different environments and is done just as he finishes certain lines such as the cut to the hall where he sings “I’m faithless now”. It creates a certain tone (It makes him seem more empowered) as it is a different scene, his voice is also slightly different because he becomes higher pitched in the song at that point.
The camera then cuts to Jaden back in my house, sitting on my sofa, this time singing. The camera then pans upwards towards the light and then' through editing, the twirl effect transitions the audience to the next scene which takes place in a forest which has been enhanced through editing to appear more green and more like Brazil. The camera then twirls down from the light and back on to Jaden in the common room, using a close up and a pan downwards towards his phone.

The next shot is a close up of Jaden’s face back in the school hall and then a cut back to the common room except the camera then pans up towards the light like before to do a twirl transition again. This suggests that it could been seen as a figment of his imagination and that it represents reality and when he goes back to think of Brazil.

The twirl effect ends and Jaden is back in my room which could represent the real Jaden while he isn’t thinking of Brazil. It also suggests the thinking and imagining of Brazil lasts a few days as his clothes are different again.
The camera cuts to a close up of Jaden while also using a focus pull effect. This will make sure the audience’s attention stays on him. This could also link to the Uses and Gratifications theory model as the audience just consumes the information/ video footage instead of using it in some way.
The next scene is a close up of Jaden however an affect has been used to replicate Jaden into four different boxes, the boxes then flip in different directions to create more of a dreamy/ imaginative affect. A flame effect is used when Jaden sings “I’m gonna burn your house down to spread peace and love”. This creates more of an image to the reader as it is on about the Amazon being torn down.

A forest is then show to represent Brazil with a pan right. A strobe effect is used to flash footage of Jaden singing in the hall which could suggest that the Brazil footage is all in his head. The camera then lingers on Jaden singing in the hall using an extreme close up, low angled shot to make him seem like a big star. The forest has been enhanced to make it greener in certain scenes.

The next few pieces of footage that are shown are Jaden back at my house, watching the footage of Brazil. The camera is blurry which could represent the fact that Jaden can’t focus on anything else except thinking about Brazil.
The next shot lingers on Jaden in the hall again and then quickly cuts to him back at home as if readying himself to watch more documentaries on Brazil.
A strobe effect is used again to show Jaden playing football and the camera constantly cuts between Jaden at home and then back to playing football which has been made greener in places to represent Brazil.

The next shot is of him standing in front of a blue curtain with the camera panning around him. This is to make him stand out even more as there is nothing in the back ground to lose focus on. I want him to stand out more to make him seem more like a star.

The camera then cuts to a river in which matches the lyrics “I heard he lives down a river somewhere” to create more of a visual image for the audience.
It does this back and forth as the line is repeated throughout the last verse with various pieces of footage of Jaden and the forest. At the end of the hall footage, the camera blurs completely as Jaden slowly steps away but the camera suddenly cuts back to the house and Jaden sitting on the sofa confirming it was all in his head the whole time and it was  just him wishing to be there. Lastly he looks towards the camera as the final few notes are plucked to signify the end of the video and song.
