Blumer and
Katz theory
In
1974 two theorists, Blumer and Katz develpoed a thoery: Uses and Gratifications
This thoery suggests that
audiences USE media texts (any) for various reasons; the various reasons they
suggested are below:
Diversion
(Escapism): To escape from
everyday life.
Personal
Relationships (Social Interation): Use the media text for emotional and other interation, e.g. subtituting soap operas for
family life.
Personal
Identity: Create their own identity from
charateristics/celebrities in media texts, and learning behaviour and values.
Entertainment: As a means of relaxation, enjoyment and
emotional release. Purely
for the ‘fun’ of the experience.
Surveillance
(Information): To gain information and knowledge.
