News Consumption UK - Ofcom report 2014
- 75% of UK adults say they get their new from TV. However, 90% of people over 55 get their news from TV compared to 59% of 16-24 year-olds (up from 44% in 2013).
- The amount of people using news apps is a
big growth area: 32% of adults said they used them in 2013; 41% in 2014.
- 19% of 16-24 year olds said they only use the internet and apps for their news
whereas only 1% of over 55s only
use internet/apps.
- Around 44% of people said they got their
main sources of news from radio (with the BBC having a 75%
share of
this) and newspapers, however, again there is a big difference in age groups
and a slight difference in gender (women more likely to get their news from TV
compared to men; men more likely to listen the radio or use an app than women).
- 28% of people said the BBC was their
single most trusted source. Although this has slightly decreased, BBC One is by
far the most watched (53%).
- The third most-used source out of all
news providers is the BBC News App which has 24% of the news market; a growth
area is people using Facebook for news (7% but growing fast) – however,
Facebook don’t create news, they host it.
- 59% of online news users in the UK say
they use the BBC news app.
- In conclusion, TV news still dominates
but its share of the market is slowly decreasing, especially amongst the 16-24
bracket, news apps etc are
an area of rapid growth but still small in comparison.
