One way in which we can tell what genre an artist might make from their cover photos would be what the logo is. For example, Catfish and the Bottlemen use an alligator eating its own tail and then have the band name in the top left hand corner, this suggests they are an indie band. Also the band isn't actually on the cover of their albums which suggests the record label isn't using the band members looks to help sell the album.
Pop artists often use pictures of the artists themselves to try and sell the album which suggests that the artists looks are being used to sell the album. They also often have bright colors.
Depending on what genre the artist is coming from, the artist may act in and look a certain way. For example, an artist from the rock genre may wear more black and have lots of tattoos.
There are also many types of music within a genre which means there are many types of music out there.
Theories: Hartley (1994) and Hodge and Kress (1988) - genres limit creativity.

- John Harley (1994) argues that 'genres are agents of ideological closure - they limit the meaning-potential of a given text - suggests genre acts as a straitjacket, limiting creative potential.
- Robert Hodge and Gunther Kress (1988) say genres 'control the behavior of producers of producers of such texts, and the expectations of potential consumers'
- Again suggests that genres can limit creativity and often merely conform to the audience's expectations.
- Do you agree or disagree with this?
- For those doing the music video brief - does operating within a specific sub - genre limit your creativity.
- John Fiske (1987) asserts that generic conventions 'embody the crucial ideological concerns of the time in which they are popular' (Fiske 1987)
- This suggests that genres tell us something about the 'way of the world' in the time in which they are popular (the zeitgeist).
- People like different styles of music.
- It depends what the trend is.
